Person

I became PhD in media and communication studies in the middle of September of 2016, when I finished my thesis Political comedy engagement: genre work, political identity and cultural citizenship. The thesis earned the prize of best Swedish PhD dissertation in media and communication studies for the period of 2015-2016.

At the moment I am working as assistant professor in media and communication studies and co-ordinator for the international master programme in that subject area. In July 2017 i received funding for a post doc project from the Wahlgrenska Foundation, where I will keep working on the study of satire, political entertainment and its young adult audiences

Before this I've worked in various research projects as a project assistant, as a teacher in media and communication studies and as a study advisor and international co-ordinator at the Department of Communication and Media.

About the research

My interests concern among other things, audiences, popular culture and democracy, but I’m fascinated by other areas as well, like issues of representation and diversity. My thesis project is a study of political comedy audiences, with the working title of “Political comedy audiences: cultural and political engagement”. The project starts out with the observation of two changes in contemporary political media; the growing popularity of political comedy as a genre, both among audiences and producers, as well as researchers (Jones 2010); and the changing news consumption habits among younger and young adult audiences (Hill 2007). According to Coleman (2013), researchers need to be aware of these changes, and that “In the face of the complex and paradoxical forces that are opening up and closing down contemporary democratic space, it is important to look at emergent spaces of political communication” (2013:378). I argue that political comedy could be such a space.

Focusing on the young adult audiences (aged 18-35) of political comedy (in this case exemplified by Swedish “Tankesmedjan”, SR P3, 2010-; and American “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”, Comedy Central, 1996-), some of the issues addressed in the study are
- the understanding of political comedy as a genre
- the connection between a person’s political or citizen identity, and political comedy
- the credibility of political comedy
- knowledge and understanding in political comedy
