My doctoral research project started in October 2021. It is a study on the visual elements and aesthetics of social movements, drawing on a case study of the 2019-2020 social movement in Hong Kong. Through a triangulation of qualitative methods of visual analysis and in-depth interviews, this research aims to bring forward the concept of disguised artivism in contemporary movements. It also explores concepts such as memory work and temporality in the specific context of social movements to unfold the dynamic and multilayered visual phenomenon of artistic activism.
